The early European version is about a little girl that is tricked by a wolf that has already eaten her grandmother, then disguises himself as her grandmother crawls in bed and tricks Little Red Riding Hood to come close to the bed so that he can grab her and eat her. Folklorists have classified fairy tales in various ways. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1995. This seems to me to be problematic since a story could spread from culture to culture and then adapt to the language and culture of each, thus giving the appearance of being ancestral when it was, in fact, not.

The main genre that emerges from nearly 10,000 preserved manuscript pages, published by Jir ı Pol ıvka (1923–31), is the fairy tale.
