One estimate places the total global value of coral-reef based recreation and tourism at $9.6 billion of the total global net benefit of coral reefs. As shallower, near shore areas become overexploited, fishing is spreading to deeper areas and more remote locations. Corals are members of the phylum Cnidaria, a diverse group that includes jellyfish, hydroids, and sea anemones. A $110 million industry was on the brink of collapse. However in coral reefs, that loss of buffering capacity at lower pH is counteracted to a degree by increased dissolution of calcium carbonate minerals.

Erin Eastwood is a Conservation Biology Master’s student in Columbia University’s Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology. Microscopic animals wouldn't have enough food, fish wouldn't have enough oxygen and plants would lose some of the carbon dioxide they need to grow. Coral reefs provide protection to the coastline and reducing the rate of coastal erosion. Experiments led by the University of Essex are now demonstrating that interactions of light, temperature and choice of coral species affect the rate at which coral calcification declines with OA.

However, the development of microbialites in the cryptic niches of the reef framework ceased about 6000 years ago when the sea level approached its present level [ 6 ]. If a coral remains stressed then it cannot reclaim zooxanthellae back into their tissues and they will not survive. In contrast climate skeptics like world-renowned physicist Freeman Dyson also embraced the concepts of Gaia as a “great force for good” uniting people to save natural habitat and endangered species.
